Local Land Services
Local Land Services are the frontline agency that helps secure the future of agriculture and the environment for NSW communities. The programs and partnerships run by us help grow farm productivity and healthy environments and play a vital role in helping to protect against pests, diseases and environmental threats. Staff live and work in local communities and are on the ground when it matters, connecting NSW landholders with knowledge, networks and experience.
We are a statewide organisation offering integrated on-ground services which are delivered regionally and tailored for each community, industry and environment. Across the state there are 11 regions, governed by regional boards which means Local Land Services understands the needs of the local communities it works with and is well placed to deliver services that address local needs. Our teams provide practical, up-to-date advice and assistance to landholders to help them grow farm productivity and healthy environments as well as protecting their enterprise against pests, diseases and environmental threats.
Core services we provide include:
- Biosecurity including animal biosecurity and welfare, plant biosecurity and invasive species
- Emergency management
- Productive, profitable and sustainable agriculture
- Land management including native vegetation and private native forestry
- Conservation and restoration of natural and cultural resources
- Travelling stock reserves.
We have more than 1,000 staff in more than 90 locations around NSW. Experienced on-ground officers have a great depth of knowledge about the land, conditions and people of the communities they work in.
Staff connect landholders and the community with knowledge, advice, information, training and networking opportunities. This support helps landholders grow their capacity to make better informed decisions to balance production, profit and sustainability.
We also contribute to growth of farm productivity by offering certification that livestock and livestock products are free of disease and residues. This is essential for continued and competitive access to domestic and international markets.
Another key function of ours is to increase community understanding of biodiversity, land stewardship and the importance of healthy and resilient ecosystems. We partner with landholders, communities and funding bodies to implement on-ground projects that have real outcomes for the environment, economy and community.
Our regional teams work closely with landholders and the community to ensure everyone is playing a part in protecting NSW against biosecurity threats. These teams work closely with people on the ground to protect against pest plant and emergency animal diseases, while connecting them with up-to-date technical advice and frontline services, including stock inspections and disease screening. The programs run by us help landholders manage pest animals and invasive weeds on their properties which not only protects their business but native habitats of threatened species as well.
We also provide support in times of emergency. Working alongside the NSW Department of Primary Industries and other partners, Local Land Services has a responsibility to help manage livestock and disease emergencies such as drought, bushfires and floods and biosecurity events involving plants, animals and pest insects. Staff are there when it matters, assisting landholders to prepare for natural disasters and helping them get back to business faster when disaster happens.
