New Frontiers Exploration Program

new frontiers

Formerly known as the New Frontiers Cooperative Drilling Program, the New Frontiers Exploration Program supports explorers to search for deposits of critical minerals and high-tech metals in NSW.

It is managed by the Geological Survey of NSW as part of the Critical Minerals and High-Tech Metals Strategy’s commitment to promote mineral exploration investment in NSW.

The program provides grants to successful applicants for exploration drilling and geophysical programs (Group 1, 6 and 10 minerals only) that demonstrate strong prospectivity, sound financial planning and a proven technical base.

It supports the long-term sustainability of the NSW resources sector by encouraging mineral exploration and discovery:

  • that will ultimately ensure a sustainable economic resource pipeline for the state
  • particularly in greenfields areas of the state
  • that will test new geological ideas and models and/or exploration in regions of significant cover
  • that will create stronger relationships between government and industry.

Round 5 announced

On 28 June 2022, the NSW Deputy Premier announced $1.5 million for the program. It follows the success of last year’s round and is being run in consecutive years for the first time. The program has been renamed the New Frontiers Exploration Program to reflect expanded eligibility to include exploration geophysics.

Applications for round 5 of the New Frontiers Exploration Program open on 1 September 2022 and close on 31 October 2022.
